Winter Sunshine Festival

Umhlanga was the best place to be this July from Sunday (3rd) to Friday (8th), it’s at this time that Umhlanga Tourism’s annual winter festival is held. Apart from the everyday hustle and bustle on the Umhlanga beaches, a variety of activities were planned for the duration of the festival. These included the trail run and walk (a 12km run/walk that started at the Umhlanga Millennium stage),as well as fun and games on the beach aimed at the children for 4 hrs per day over the full 5 days, concluding with an evening of Jazz on Friday the 8th in the Umhlanga precinct with the well know Durban based jazz group “Beat-Route”.

Let’s take a look at the highlights:

12km Trail Run and Walk

The July trail run/walk was a great success. The start point for the event was at the Umhlanga Millennium stage @ 7 am and the finish was at the Breakers Resort, where a piping hot breakfast was provided for all 88 participants during the prize giving. The men’s winner was Eric Ngubane who finished at an amazing time of 47m,42 seconds and the ladies winner was Michelle Scott in a time of 56m, 39 seconds. Michelle was also the 8th person home overall.

TUG- OF- WAR:

The children as well as parents enjoyed themselves on the beach and could not get enough of the tug-of-war which comprised of boys’ vs girls and parent’s vs children. It was great fun to watch the rivalry between the groups.

HOOLA-HOOP

All of the participants during the festival were full of energy and very eager to take part in activities such as the hoola-hoop competition, egg throwing competition, limbo competitions, face painting and egg and spoon race.

FACE PAINTING

The whole festival was a great success, thanks to our visitors, the surrounding community members as well as our sponsors who made the event possible, who were the eThekwini council and BnB Sure, specialist insurers to the BnB industry.

NOW WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE 10 DAY UMHLANGA SUMMER CARNIVAL TO BE HELD IN DECEMBER, STARTING ON THE 15TH.
